Digestate Certification with SUEZ!

European Biogas Association - 26/09/2025

Under the EU Fertilising Products Regulation, digestate can be certified and traded across Europe as a fertiliser. In this interview, SUEZ shares insights into the certification process, key challenges, and its relevance for sustainable waste management and agriculture. What input materials were used to produce your digestate certified under the EU Fertilising Products Regulation (FPR)? If biowaste was included, how did you verify and ensure its separate collection? Biowaste traceability is ensured at the source through a Waste Identification Sheet (FID), followed by a Commercial Accompanying Document (DAC), which tracks the animal by-product from the producer to its final destination. Which notified body managed the certification of your product? Eurofins Certification Under which product category did you register your digestate? (e.g., solid organic fertiliser, liquid organic fertiliser, organic soil improver, other) TDA’s solid digestate is certified as a “soil organic amendment.” – TDA (Lands of Aquitaine) The Fertilising Products Regulation (FPR) includes strict requirements (e.g., nutrient content thresholds, contaminants limits, etc.). Were these requirements difficult to meet? Did you have to post-treat the digestate to comply? Based on numerous analyses conducted before and after certification, none revealed any exceedance of the limits set by the Fertilising Products Regulation. Biogenic CO2 from biogases: key to Europe’s carbon strategy

European Biogas Association - 25/09/2025

Brussels, 25/09/2025 – The European Biogas Association (EBA) today launched a comprehensive paper exploring the valorisation of biogenic CO₂ from the biogas sector, enabling the EU’s carbon strategy to reduce emissions and support a sustainable, low-carbon economy as a scalable and competitive solution. Europe’s CO₂ demand is rising, driven by emerging markets and stricter regulations for green products and industrial decarbonisation. Biogenic CO₂ from the biogas sector can meet this demand while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the latest EBA data, the biogas sector is set to become a leading industry in bio-CO₂ capture in Europe within the next few years. By 2040, EU biomethane plants could capture up to 89 million tonnes (Mt) of biogenic CO₂ annually, more than 25% of the carbon capture required to meet the EU Climate Law targets. This would make a significant contribution to the EU’s overall carbon capture goal of 344 million tonnes per year. In the biogas sector, bio-CO₂ captured during upgrading can either be stored underground (BECCS) or used as a raw material for e-fuels, chemicals, building materials, greenhouses, and food and beverage production. Unlike fossil CO₂, which releases long-stored carbon into the atmosphere, biogenic CO₂ is part of […] The post Biogenic CO2 from biogases: key to Europe’s carbon strategy appeared first on European Biogas Association.

Industry Vision for Biogases Tripartite Agreements

European Biogas Association - 19/09/2025

On 16 July 2025, the European Biogas Association (EBA) and the Support Group of the Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP) jointly released a strategic paper outlining the future of biogases in Europe. This vision document supports the development of Biogases Tripartite Agreements, aiming to foster collaboration between the European Commission, Member States, and industry stakeholders. With biogases already supplying 19 bcm of renewable gas to the EU and a target of 35 bcm by 2030, the paper highlights the sector’s potential to enhance energy security, reduce emissions, and stimulate local economies. It proposes a structured framework for governance, intervention areas, and progress monitoring, and calls for coordinated action to unlock the full potential of biomethane and its co-products. COGEN Europe Annual Conference 2025

European Biogas Association - 16/09/2025

COGEN Europe’s Annual Conference 2025 will be held at the Renaissance Hotel in Brussels ‘European Quarter’ on 3 and 4 of December 2025. This event will bring together senior executives from companies and organisations with an interest in energy efficient technologies, together with policymakers from the European Union institutions and other stakeholders. The programme includes a series of panel sessions focusing on challenges and opportunities for cogeneration in the context of the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal and policies to promote the decarbonisation of Europe’s energy system.ts and awareness-raising campaigns. ALFA has implemented its activities across six EU countries (Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, and Spain). The project has also conducted research to define local framework conditions and uncover challenges and has developed a platform of tools to facilitate collaboration among industry actors and to help estimate a farm’s biogas production potential, together with its prospect of profit as well as environmental and social impacts. To conclude all its work, the project will develop policy recommendations and a replication guide. Information about the project can be found here: https://alfa-res.eu/ & https://alfaep.eu/  Learn all about the event! Let Green Gas Count campaign coalition issues High-Level Recommendations towards corporate greenhouse gas reporting

European Biogas Association - 05/09/2025

The “Let Green Gas Count” campaign, coordinated by a coalition of eight organisations, including the European Biogas Association, has published High-Level Recommendations on the treatment of low-carbon gases in corporate greenhouse gas reporting.Launched in February 2025, “Let Green Gas Count” is an industry-led campaign calling for clarity around market instruments for renewable gaseous fuels in the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.  The coalition urges the GHG Protocol governing bodies to recognise robust market instruments, such as certified green gas certificates, in Scope 1 emissions reporting. This change would enable companies to account for their use of green gas transparently and consistently, supporting faster and more effective decarbonisation. The coalition’s High-Level Recommendations aim to act as interim guidance for the treatment of low-carbon gases in corporate greenhouse gas reporting until the GHG Protocol publishes its standard. “More and more multinational companies are showing strong interest in sourcing biomethane. By harmonising GHG reporting rules for biomethane certificates, our Recommendations give these corporate buyers the clarity they need to act while staying consistent with the existing GHG Protocol Framework. This is essential to unlocking the powerful pull of corporate demand and accelerating investment in new green gas projects, supporting the EU’s ambition to scale up […] The post Let Green Gas Count campaign coalition issues High-Level Recommendations towards corporate greenhouse gas reporting appeared first on European Biogas Association.

Masterclass | The biogases market: certification and trade

European Biogas Association - 30/07/2025

The European biogas and biomethane market is experiencing rapid growth, with a 37% increase in biogas capacity across the continent. As this expansion continues, the importance of biogases in meeting climate targets becomes increasingly evident. Biogases, which are fully interchangeable with fossil natural gas, offer a renewable alternative already used in heating, industry, and transport. To ensure sustainability, biogases must be clearly defined and certified by independent third-party bodies, which validate their environmental integrity. This certification enables standardized and transparent trading of biomethane across Europe by detailing its energy and environmental attributes. However, trading remains complex due to differences in how EU Member States connect to the European Gas grid and structure their regulations. This Masterclass provides an in-depth look at the opportunities and challenges of biomethane certification and trading. The first part explores the regulatory framework and the steps required for certification, while the second part focuses on the key elements of trading, showing how producers can benefit from both domestic and cross-border markets.
